Project doesn't automatically update the filtered list. One thing to keep in mind about this filtered list, if you make changes to your schedule, some tasks could become critical, and others could drop off the critical path. In the table, all of the values for total slack are zero days. Now you see a list of your critical tasks. In the data section, click the down arrow in the Filter box, and choose the Critical filter on the menu. To do that, we're gonna head to the View tab. Another way to focus on the critical path is to filter your task list to just show critical tasks. On the other hand, now Design IT infrastructure has total slack of two days, and it is not critical. When I do that, notice that the task bar gets longer, but also it turns red, because now it controls the successor. Well I'm gonna change the duration to 12 days, and press Enter. Well what happens if I change the duration for Prepare drawings? Something happened, and it took a lot longer. Design IT infrastructure has zero days of total slack. Another task that occurs at the same time, and also links to the same successor, is on the critical path. And sure enough, in the timescale, the bar is blue, so it's not critical. You can see that it has a value of slack. Let's take a look at task 26, prepare drawings. So when there's no slack, that is zero days, that means that if the task delays, it delays the end of the project. Well the thing about slack is that that indicates how much a task can move. Notice that the values for slack are zero for tasks on the critical path.
When I see that in the menu, click it to add that field to the table. I'm gonna right click the heading for Duration, and then on the shortcut menu, choose Insert Column.
The other way is to add the Total Slack field to the table. So it's easy to see which ones are critical. When you do that, all of the tasks that are on the critical path now have red task bars. In the bar style section, turn on the checkbox Critical Tasks. Now in the timescale, I see all of my task bars, but how do I tell which tasks are on the critical path? What you do, is head to the Format tab. Project makes it easy to see the critical path, so you can keep your project on time, or shorten the schedule. Which means changes to the critical path also change the project finish date. The critical path, is the longest linked sequence of tasks in a project.
